What is Obstetric Medicine?
Obstetrics Medicine
Based on the principle of "a sound baby in a sound maternity," obstetric medicine is a new field of medicine that should be created through the fusion of internal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology, with expertise in treating pregnancies of women with chronic diseases and medical diseases that appear during pregnancy (pregnancy complications). We, the Japanese Society of Obstetric Medicine, aim to solidify the identity of obstetric physicians and improve the quality of medical care by expanding our network.
Pregnancy and childbirth place a heavy burden on the mother, increasing the risk of worsening underlying diseases, and miscarriage or premature birth. In addition, some patients are hesitant to continue their medications because they are worried about the effects on the fetus. We support such patients in balancing pregnancy and treatment.
It is important to follow up on women who have developed pregnancy complications. For example, it is known that women who experience gestational diabetes or hypertensive disorders in pregnancy are more likely to develop diabetes or hypertension after delivery. Pregnancy is an opportunity to see the diseases pregnant women are susceptible to have in the future. By identifying the predisposing factors and providing lifestyle guidance, we seek to maintain the health of the mother and child over the long term after childbirth, thereby preventing future diseases.
Preparation for pregnancy begins before puberty, so early physical health care and health education are important.
We support women who are concerned about the use of medications during pregnancy and lactation.
As the social environment changes rapidly, the number of women with chronic diseases and/or pregnancy complications are increasing due to the rise in childbearing age. In recent years, medical advances have improved the treatment of diseases, making it possible for women with a variety of chronic diseases to conceive and give birth while maintaining good control of their symptoms. In addition, perhaps due to the fact that the number of children a woman has in her lifetime is decreasing, people are trying to seek better ways for ideal pregnancy and childbirth.
Under these circumstances, the role of "obstetric medicine" is becoming more and more important every year. As a position that aims to bring the well-being of mothers and infants by treating mothers based on a thorough understanding of the unique characteristics of pregnancy, every member is aware of the necessity and the role required by the society. Therefore, we are striving to improve and develop the level of research, education, and practice of obstetric medicine in Japan.
